Meditation techniques

Techniques

There are perhaps a dozen techniques that matter and several hundred names for them. Here is the short map — then pick one and stay with it for eight weeks.

Beginners lose more time to choosing a technique than to practising one. The honest position is that head-to-head trials rarely show a clear winner: the technique you will actually do beats the technique that is theoretically superior.

So the question isn't "which is best". It's "which one suits my body, my temperament and the ten minutes I actually have".

Before technique: the body

Nearly every "I can't meditate" story we hear turns out to be a posture problem. Knees above hips, a collapsing lower back, a neck holding a heavy head at the wrong angle — twenty minutes of that is unbearable for anyone, and it has nothing to do with your mind.

Read meditation posture first. It is the least glamorous page on this site and probably the most useful.

What gets in the way?A restless bodyA loud headA harsh commentaryWalking · Body scanGrounding · MantraLoving-kindnessThen stay with it for eight weeks before judging it.
Choose by obstacle, not by philosophy. It is a faster and more honest way in.
The eight-week rule. Almost every structured programme runs eight weeks, and that is not arbitrary — it is roughly how long it takes for a technique to stop feeling like a technique. Switching every fortnight guarantees you experience only the awkward part of each one.

What we don't cover, and where it lives

We stay on the practice itself. Sound and frequency work, energy systems and chakra practice, qi gong and reiki are real subjects with real depth — they are simply not ours, and pretending otherwise would make this page worse.
